The Canadian Food Inspection agency speculates that 10% of the food on our store shelves is a target for food fraud. As of July 2019, the CFIA has been granted $24.4 Million to target food fraud. Fish, Sausage, and Honey are common targets in Canada and have been a recent focus to the CFIA. In a 2019 study, the U of G revealed 32% of all 203 fish samples and 20% of all 100 sausage samples tested were mislabelled. New technology to detect food fraud is needed to keep up with the growing market as much of what is mislabelled is going undetected.
