At Sweetwater labs in Missouri a series of tests in 2019 were run on various off the shelf honey brands to test adulteration. They found various causes of adulteration such as mislabelling, syrup dilution, and overheating among many honey samples. “We tested about 60 to 70 different companies, and we found that about 50 to 60 percent of those honeys tested are bad honey,” Heitzinger said. “Out of 110 products, around 70 percent were found to be adulterated. There’s been something done to them. It is just pure fraud in our opinion. They’re selling products to the American public that isn’t what it says it is.” As a community of scientists we rely on each other to challenge the system and build our knowledge in this field. Vice’s article provides just another example of how a lab is taking initiative to stop honey fraud across the worldwide.
